Sgian Dubhs

Sgian Dubh is Gaelic for black ("dubh") dagger ("sgian"), as invariably the handle was carved from black bog oak, and more subtly, as the word "black" meant secret or covert as in "black market"; most appropriate for this weapon of last resort which was usually concealed, only to be exhibited in the presence of a host out of courtesy, and thus placed in the wearer's hose in an obvious position. The SD/R conforms to the traditional REGIMENTAL pattern whilst the SAFETY (SD/SAFE) version is a one piece moulding with no blade, primarily intended for dress hire, sale to children and security purposes. The CLAN CREST Sgian Dubh (SD/C) will accept any of our small crest badges. The STAG KNIVES (SK) on the the next page have simulated horn handles; the sheaths of SK/L and SK/T are leather. All are supplied gift boxed except for the SD/SAFE.
